When Hakone’s clean-line, modern architecture is combined with the soft sunlight that pours through purposefully designed large windows, the property truly becomes one with the natural beauty of the surrounding forest, reminding guests of resorts in Northern Europe. Part of the hotel was originally designed as a house by renowned architect Tokichiro Fujita in 1915 and moved to Hakone in 1917.
Interior design East meets west

Intentionally spare and modernly conceived, the rooms at Hakone Retreat by Onko Chishin are inviting havens of deep hues, soft textures, and a welcoming wood-burning stove. The hotel presents stunning standalone cottages that are imbued with a sense of Japanese design tradition, yet artful Western lines, and natural wood that pays homage to the surroundings.

As we assess all that we’ve taken for granted this year, we found that travel is high on that list. We are dreaming about traveling through Japan but find that it’s also become important to ask how and why. Inspired by the unique Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, we decided to peer into this captivating land through this special lens.
